Die Preisverleihung des 24. European Media Art Festivals fand am Sonntag Abend in der Lagerhalle Osnabrück statt.
Der Verband der Deutschen Filmkritik (VDFK) vergab den Preis für den besten deutschen Experimentalfilm und 1000 Euro an Gerhard Funk und seinen Film „bardzo“ (9 Min.).
In der Animation geht es um ein antriebsloses Wesen, das sich scheinbar nicht aus seiner Lage zu befreien weiß – bis es doch einen winzigen Hoffnungsschimmer gibt.
Die Mitglieder der diesjährigen Jury des VDFK sind Günther Agde, Alexandra Pütter und Bodo Schönfelder. Ihr Urteil: „Die Jury war beeindruckt vom sparsamen, aber wirkungsvollen Einsatz der Mittel, der von Stilsicherheit und Konsequenz des Filmemachers zeugt. Die flächige Gestaltung in abgestuften Grautönen und deren Aufbrechen durch prononcierte Farbeffekte und Auslassungen kennzeichnen den Film. Computergestützte Dreidimensionalität und Reduktion auf Grau ermöglichen Experimente mit Wiederholung und Variation. Der hohe Stellenwert der Musik und die Toneffekte unterstützen die Führung der Bilder. Nicht zuletzt ist bardzo einfach schön anzusehen.“
Eine internationale Jury vergab sowohl den EMAF Award, den Newcomer Award als auch den Dialogpreis des Auswärtigen Amtes. Sie besteht aus Arjon Dunnewind, Kathy Rae Huffman und Gabriel Soucheyre. Überraschenderweise hat die Jury in diesem Jahr beschlossen, den EMAF-Award sowohl für einen Kurz-, als auch für einen Langfilm zu vergeben und die Preisgelder neu aufzuteilen.
Der EMAF Award prämiert richtungsweisende Arbeiten der Medienkunst und ging sowohl an Emily Vey Duke und Cooper Battersby mit dem Film „Lesser Apes“ (17 Min.) als auch an den Langfilm „You Are Here“ (100 Min.) von Daniel Cockburn. Für beide Filme wurde zudem ein Preisgeld von je 1500 Euro vergeben.
„Lesser Apes“ propagiert eine enthemmte Sexualität zwischen den Menschen – den „pinkies“ – und unseren nächsten Verwandten, den Affen. Die Regisseure heben diese Dichotomie auf und nehmen so eine Umdeutung des Perversionsbegriffs vor.
Daniel Cockburn’s „You Are Here“ stößt mit seinem breit angelegten Denkspiel einen ernsten und bedeutsamen Diskurs über das flüchtige Wesen Identität an. Die Jury gratuliert herzlich zu diesem ersten Langfilm des kanadischen Regisseurs.
In diesem Jahr wurde der mit 1500 Euro dotierte Newcomer Award zu ersten Mal verliehen und ging an den 40-minütigen Film „Půlnoc (Midnight)“ von Klára Tasovská. Sie studiert an der FAMU Akademie in Prag und zeigt in ihrem Werk die sozialen und psychologischen Auswirkungen von Licht und Dunkelheit auf den Menschen.
Eine lobende Erwähnung der Kategorie Newcomer erhielt auch Rizki R. Utama, der in seinem Film „Sidewalk Stories“ anhand von auf den Straßen Westeuropas gefundenen Alltagsgegenständen Rückschlüsse auf die kulturelle Identität Europas zieht. Die Jury freut sich auf weitere Werke des Künstlers und ermutigte ihn sehr, in Bezug auf Form und Inhalt weiterhin Neues zu wagen.
Der Dialogpreis des Auswärtigen Amts zur Förderung des interkulturellen Austauschs gewann „Satellite, As Long As It Is Aiming At The Sky“ (29 Min.) von Nasrin Tabatabai und Babak Afrassiabi über die Welt der iranischen Satelliten-Fernsehsender in Los Angeles. Die Künstler erhalten zudem 1500 Euro Preisgeld.
Lobend erwähnt wurde hier auch der Film „Invitation“ von Payam Zeinalabedini, in dem uns die iranische Filmemacherin mit auf eine Pilgerreise durch den Irak nimmt, die die Jury laut ihrem Urteil nicht mehr vergessen wird.

Das EMAF in Osnabrück zählt zu den bedeutendsten Foren internationaler Medienkunst und ist ein offenes Labor für kreative und künstlerische Experimente, die zur Weiterentwicklung der Medien und der Ästhetik ihrer Inhalte beitragen. The award ceremony of the 24th European Media Art Festival took place at the Lagerhalle Osnabrück on Sunday evening.
The Verband der Deutschen Filmkritik (VDFK) awarded the prize for the best German experimental film, along with 1000 euros, to Gerhard Funk for his film “bardzo” (9 Min.).
The animation deals with a sluggish being that appears to be unable to free itself from its situation – until there is a tiny flicker of hope, after all.
The members of this year’s VDFK jury are Günther Agde, Alexandra Pütter and Bodo Schönfelder. Their comments: “The jury was was impressed by the sparing but effective use of resources, demonstrating the filmmaker’s surety of style and consistency. The film is characterised by a two-dimensional creation in gradual shades of grey, broken by pronounced colour effects and omissions. The computer-aided three-dimensional appearance and the reduction to the colour grey enable experiments to be made with repetition and variation. The great importance attached to the music and the sound effects underline the manipulation of the images. Last but not least, bardzo is simply nice to watch.”
An international jury awarded not only the EMAF Award and the Newcomer Award but also the Dialogpreis of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This jury is made up of Arjon Dunnewind, Kathy Rae Huffman and Gabriel Soucheyre. Surprisingly, the jury decided this year to present the EMAF Award to a short film and a feature-length film, splitting the prize money.
The EMAF Award, given to trend-setting works of Media Art, was awarded to Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby for their film “Lesser Apes” (17 Min.), as well as to the feature-length film “You Are Here” (100 Min.) by Daniel Cockburn. Prize money totalling 1500 euros was awarded for each film.
“Lesser Apes” propagates uninhibited sexuality between humans – the “pinkies” – and our closest relatives, the apes. The directors do away with this dichotomy, reinterpreting the term perversion.
With its broadly based brain teaser, Daniel Cockburn’s “You Are Here” initiates serious and important discourse on the volatile nature of identity. The jury warmly congratulates the Canadian director on his first feature-length film.
This year, the Newcomer Award, with 1500 euro prize money, has been awarded for the first time. It was awarded to the 40-minute film “Půlnoc (Midnight)” by Klára Tasovská. In her works, the artist, who studies at the FAMU Academy in Prague, reveals the social and psychological effects light and darkness have on humans.
An honorable mention in the Newcomer category was given to Rizki R. Utama. In his film “Sidewalk Stories”, the artist uses everyday items found on the streets of Western Europe to draw conclusions on the cultural identity of Europe. The jury is looking forward to further works by the artist, and emphatically encourages him to continue to dare go down new paths with regard to form and content.
The Dialogpreis, awarded by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote intercultural exchange, went to “Satellite, As Long As It Is Aiming At The Sky” (29 Min.) by Nasrin Tabatabai and Babak Afrassiabi, about the world of the Iranian satellite television broadcasting company in Los Angeles. The artists also receive prize money totalling 1500 euros.
A special mention was also given to the film “Invitation” by Payam Zeinalabedini, in which the Iranian filmmaker takes us on a pilgrimage through Iraq – a journey the jury, according to its comments, will never forget.

Standish Lawder
Standish Lawder has two passions: Experimental film and teaching film. Lawder set his mark in the art world with his 16mm films, which he started with at a graduate school at Yale in 1967. Today, several of his films are in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
A famous one is the film Necrology, a 12 min. shot of anonymous commuters at Central Station. Too tired to rewind the film, he simply watched it backwards and the concept was born. The effect of the finished film eerily shows lines of people ascending and disappearing into a shadowy abyss. Today Lawder is director of the Denver Darkroom, the premier teaching center for fine art photography in Colorado, which he founded in 1996, when he retired from his position as professor and department chair of the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego. Standish currently works primarily with stereoscopic imagery. “Standish Lawder is a cinematic magician, an American original. His films are an astonishing mix of formal beauty, structural rigor; and a probing wit. He is a high-wire performer, with no net. Most of us want to think outside the box;
Lawder invented the box and then threw it away.” (Clifford Ross)

Eine kritische und spannende Auseinandersetzung mit der aktuellen Medienkunst und –kultur bietet der Kongress-Bereich des 24. European Media Art Festivals.
Die Künstlerin Prof. Candice Breitz leitet eine Reihe von Vorträgen ein. Sie ist in der Ausstellung des EMAF mit ihrer Arbeit “The Character” vertreten und beschreibt dabei die Entstehung des Projekts. Zudem wird sie auf die indische und nigerianische Filmindustrie eingehen, die zunehmend die Vorherrschaft des amerikanischen Blockbusters herausfordert. Weiter geht es mit Timothy Druckrey: „Time Shift“ ist der Titel seiner Präsentation, die mit vielen Filmbeispielen dem Faktor Zeit im Film auf den Grund gehen wird. Im Rahmen des Japan-Specials spricht auch Prof. Machiko Kusahara beim diesjährigen Festival. Sie ist Kuratorin aus Tokio und wird in einer Präsentation die spezifischen Ausprägungen der Medienkunstszene Japans vorstellen. Prof. Yvonne Spielmann gibt Einblicke in ihr Buch „Hybridkultur“. Hybridkulturen sind Gegenwartsphänomene, hervorgegangen aus der Verknüpfung von Einflüssen verschiedener Medien, kultureller Kontexte und Diskurszusammenhänge. Weitere Vorträge beschäftigen sich mit dem Einfluss der Medien und des Internets: Die Präsentation „Dramaturgie der Gewalt? – Oder: Warum Games auch Kunst sind!“ von Prof. Dr. Michael Bhatty zeigt die Synergien, Konvergenzen und Divergenzen medialer und technologischer Inhalte auf. Paolo Cirio und Alessandro Ludovico erstellten eine Software, die Bilder und Daten von rund 250 000 Facebook-Nutzern kopierte und für einen angeblichen Dating-Service „lovely-faces.com“ nutzte. Die Medienresonanz war riesig und Facebook nicht gerade begeistert. Prof. Ludger Brümmer – ZKM, Zentrum für Kunst- und Medientechnologie, stellt das Projekt Mediaartbase.de vor und Martin Groh vom documenta Archiv, Sandra Mijatovis und Sarah Niedergesäß vom Kasseler Dokumentarfilm- und Videofest sowie Alfred Rotert und Ralf Sausmikat (EMAF) – zeigen ausgewählte Arbeiten aus den jeweiligen Archiven. Prof. Rotraut Pape präsentiert die Geschichte der Medienkunst und ihre vielen Ausprägungen und Projekte aus ihrer persönlichen Sicht und stellt die Frage, ob durch die verstärkte Digitalisierung des 21. Jahrhunderts tatsächlich alles einfacher, „userfreundlicher“, geworden ist oder im Gegenteil nur noch eine Software-Version die andere vom Desktop jagt. Der Medienphilosoph Prof. Dr. Siegfried Zielinski vom Villem Flusser Archiv der UdK Berlin geht mit seiner Präsentation „Die Abschaffung der Gegenwart und (An-Archive) der Zukunft“ auf die Technologien des Vergessens, die Verkopplung von Zukunft und Vergangenheit und die extreme Verkürzung der Speicherzeiten ein. Neben den Vorträgen und Präsentationen bietet der Kongress auch zahlreiche Möglichkeiten zu Diskussionen, Informationsaustausch und der Kontaktaufnahme zu anderen Medieninteressierten. The Congress, part of the 24th European Media Art Festival, offers a critical and exciting exploration of current Media Art and Culture.
A series of lectures will be introduced by the artist Professor Candice Breitz. She will present her work “The Character”, showing at the EMAF exhibition, and explain how it came about. She will also explore the Indian and Nigerian film industries, which are increasingly challenging the dominance of American blockbusters. Next, Timothy Druckrey will give his presentation entitled “Time Shift”, which will delve into the aspect of time in film, using countless cinematic examples. Professor Machiko Kusahara will also deliver a talk at this year’s festival as part of the Japan special. In her presentation, the curator from Tokyo will introduce the specific characteristics of the Media Art scene in Japan. Professor Yvonne Spielmann will give us a taste of her book “Hybridkultur”. Hybrid cultures are phenomena of the present that emerge from connections between influences of different media, and from various cultural contexts and discursive fields. Other lectures explore the influence of the media and the Internet: in his presentation “Dramaturgy of violence? – Or: Why games are also art!”, Professor Dr. Michael Bhatty highlights the synergies, convergences and divergences in media and technological contents. Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico designed special software that copied images and data from around 250,000 Facebook users, which they then used for a supposed dating service “lovely-faces.com”. The media response was huge, and facebook was not amused. Professor Ludger Brümmer from the ZKM, Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe, will present the project Mediaartbase.de; Martin Groh from the documenta Archiv, Sandra Mijatovis and Sarah Niedergesäß from Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival, and Alfred Rotert and Ralf Sausmikat (EMAF) will screen a selection of works from their archives. Professor Rotraut Pape will present the history of Media Art and its many forms, as well as projects, from her personal perspective and experience. She will ask whether the increased level of digitalisation in the 21st century has indeed made everything easier, more “user-friendly”, or whether, on the contrary, it is now a matter of one software version chasing another from the desktop. In his presentation entitled “Abolition of the present and (an-archives) of the future”, the media philosopher Professor Dr. Siegfried Zielinski from the Villem Flusser Archiv of Berlin University of the Arts will explore the technologies of forgetting, how the future is coupled to the past, and the extreme reduction of storage times. In addition to lectures and presentations, the Congress also offers visitors ample opportunity to engage in discussions, exchange information and establish contacts with others interested in media. Japanese Media Art Now!
Unser tiefes Mitgefühl gilt Japan, den Opfern von Erdbeben und Tsunami und der atomaren Bedrohung durch das beschädigte Atomkraftwerk in Fukushima. Die katastrophale Lage des Landes hat uns in besonderem Maße getroffen, da das EMAF bereits seit vielen Jahren eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern, Universitäten und Kulturinstitutionen in Japan pflegt, aus der mittlerweile persönliche Kontakte und Freundschaften entstanden sind.
Wir nahmen das 150. Jubiläum der deutsch-japanischen Freundschaft zum Anlass, die facettenreiche japanische Medienkunst beim diesjährigen EMAF umfassend zu präsentieren.
Wir möchten das Festival als Plattform nutzen, um den interkulturellen Dialog, gerade in dieser für Japan sehr schwierigen Situation, noch intensiver zu führen und damit der Öffentlichkeit die kulturelle Seite Japans einer breiten Öffentlichkeit nahe zu bringen.
Nach Rücksprachen mit den Künstlern und Institutionen in Japan wurde beschlossen, das lang geplante Länder-Spezial beim diesjährigen EMAF zu zeigen.
Der mit dem Prix Ars Electronica 2010 ausgezeichnete Ryoichi Kurokawa zeigt beim diesjährigen EMAF seine Performance „Rheo“. Der Titel bezieht sich auf das griechische Wort für ‚Fluss‘ bzw. ‚fließen‘ denn so gehen auch die Audio- und Video-Aufnahmen realer Landschaften fließend in eine grafische Analyse über.
Außerdem zeigt das EMAF die Performance „Braun Tube Jazz Band“ von Ei Wada, bei der alte Fernseher, also Braun’sche Röhren, zu Musikinstrumenten werden.
„The Tenth Sentiment“ heißt die Installation des Künstlers Ryoto Kuwakubo, die den Betrachter mitnimmt auf eine Zugreise. Eine mit einer Lichtquelle ausgestattete Modelleisenbahn fährt auf ihrem Weg an unterschiedlichsten Gegenständen vorbei und wirft eine beeindruckende Schattenlandschaft in den Raum.
Norimichi Hirakawa’s „the irreversible“ ist ein Videoprojekt bei dem 1024 Explosionen rückwärts abgespielt werden und so ein Spiel mit der Zeitachse entsteht.
In den Filmprogrammen werden neben diversen Kurzfilmen auch die Kino-Filme „Symbol“ (Regie: Hitoshi Matsumoto) und „Branded to Kill“ (Regie: Seijun Suzuki) zu sehen sein. Darüber hinaus präsentiert das EMAF eine Auswahl von Animationsfilmen des Japan Media Arts Festival (JMAF) in Tokio.
Vorträge der Kuratorin Prof. Machiko Kusahara aus Tokio und der Professorin und Autorin Yvonne Spielmann im Kongress runden das Länder-Spezial Japanese Media Art Now ab.

Just like everyone else, we are deeply saddened by the effects of the earthquake and tsunami disaster, and the current situation in the nuclear power stations in Japan. Which is why we would like to express our sympathy with the victims.
The EMAF has been collaborating with artists, universities and cultural institutions in Japan for many years, which has led to the establishment of numerous personal contacts and friendships over the years. What is more, 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of German-Japanese friendship. From this arose the idea to present the very diverse range of Japanese Media Art at this year’s EMAF. The Festival aims to conduct even more intense cultural dialogue, so as to familiarise the public with the cultural greatness of Japan.
Ryoichi Kurokawa, who was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica in 2010, will show his performance “Rheo” at this year’s festival. The title refers to the Greek word for ‘flow’ or ‘flowing’, which is why the audio and video shots of real landscapes flow into a graphical analysis.
The EMAF will also be showing the performance “Braun Tube Jazz Band” by Ei Wada, in which old cathode ray tubes become musical instruments.
“The Tenth Sentiment” is the name of the installation by the artist Ryoto Kuwakubo, who takes the viewer with him on a train journey. A model railway, equipped with a light source, goes on its way, passing all kinds of objects, creating an impressive landscape of shadows in the room.
Norimichi Hirakawa’s “the irreversible” is a video project in which 1024 explosions are played in reverse, creating a game with the time line.
The film programmes will offer not only Japanese short films; the feature films “Symbol” (director: Hitoshi Matsumoto) and “Branded to Kill” (director: Seijun Suzuki) will also be screened. In addition, the EMAF will present a selection of animation films from the Japan Media Arts Festival (JMAF) in Tokyo.
Lectures by the curator Professor Machiko Kusahara from Tokyo and professor and author Yvonne Spielmann at the Festival’s Congress round off the country special Japanese Media Art Now.

MOVING STORIES
Den Hauptteil der EMAF-Ausstellung „Planet M“ nimmt ein internationales Kooperationsprojekt ein: Moving Stories. Unterstützt von der Europäischen Union produzieren und präsentieren sechs Organisationen aus Belgien, Italien, Österreich, Frankreich, Polen und Deutschland neue künstlerische Arbeiten.
Die Künstler wurden aufgefordert, die Erzählkunst des bewegten Bildes zu hinterfragen und neue Strategien des Erzählens zu erforschen. Die entstandenen Videoarbeiten und Installationen zeugen in Form und Inhalt von großer Vielfalt und zeigen unter Einbeziehung von Fiktion oder Dokumentation, Tatsachen oder Vermutungen, in linearer oder interaktiver Form neue Sichtweisen narrativer Strukturen. Moving Stories ist eine Ausstellung, die von den Kooperationspartnern im Laufe des Jahres 2011 in den sechs Ländern gezeigt wird.
Candice Breitz (D/ZA): Moving Stories.
Candice Breitz zeigte 15 indischen Jugendlichen jeweils verschiedene Bollywoodfilme,
in denen ein Kind eine tragende Rolle spielt. Anschließend beschrieben die Jugendlichen
die Kinderrolle, ihr Bild von Kindheit und Jugend im Film und ihre Empfindungen
gegenüber dem Kind im indischen Kino.
Nicolas Provost (B): Untitled.
Mit Dialogausschnitten eines jungen Paares erzählt Nicolas Provost
eine romantische Liebesgeschichte. Gefundenes Werbefilmmaterial
von Flugzeugen, die dem Sonnenuntergang entgegenfliegen,
eröffnet ein Spiel zwischen Illusion und filmischer Erzählung.
Masbedo (I): Guardare se stessi guardarsi.
Ein wunderschönes Piano wird durch Gewehrkugeln zerstört.
Der Knall der Schüsse erschüttert den Raum,
das Instrument verliert seine Form;
am Ende bleibt ein undefinierbarer Materialhaufen zurück.
Mihai Grecu (F): Under the Centipede Sun.
Grecu entwirft das Portrait einer Landschaft nach
der Zerstörung durch einen Krieg, durch eine Naturkatastrophe
oder ein Umweltdesaster. Unwirtlich und menschenleer
entfaltet sie ihre eigene Dynamik.
Pawel Janicki (PL): Oceanus.
Wie bei einer Reise auf hoher See eröffnet die interaktive
Installation abwechslungsreiche Navigationsmöglichkeiten
durch die Geschichten von „Oceanus“.
Rainer Gamsjäger (A): Cluster.
Der Besucher ist mit einer gewaltigen Wolkenfront, einer riesigen
horizontalen Rauchsäule konfrontiert. Was auf dem ersten Blick wie
eine Auseinandersetzung mit Naturphänomenen und Grenzerfahrungen
erscheint, ist gleichzeitig auch eine intensive Beschäftigung mit den digitalen
Möglichkeiten der Videotechnik und ihrer suggestiven Kraft.

MOVING STORIES
The main part of the EMAF exhibition “Planet M” is an international co-operative project: Moving Stories. With funding from the European Union, six organisations from Belgium, Italy, Austria, France, Poland and Germany produce and present new artistic works. The artists are encouraged to question the narration of moving images and to explore new strategies of narration. The videos and installations created in the process demonstrate a great variety of form and content; by including fiction or documentation, facts or speculation, in a linear or interactive form, they show new perspectives of narrative structures. Moving Stories is an exhibition that will be shown in the six countries of the co-operation partners in the course of 2011.
Candice Breitz (D/ZA): Moving Stories.
Candice Breitz showed 15 Indian adolescents each a different Bollywood film in which a child plays a leading role. Afterwards, the youths described the role the child played, their view of childhood and youth in film and their feelings towards children in Indian cinema.
Nicolas Provost (B): Untitled.
Nicolas Provost narrates a romantic love story using dialogue excerpts spoken by a young couple. Found advertising footage of aircraft flying towards the sunset open up a game between illusion and cinematic narration.
Masbedo (I): Guardare se stessi guardarsi.
A beautiful piano is destroyed by bullets. The report of the shots shakes the room, the instrument loses its shape; what is left is an indefinable heap of material.
Mihai Grecu (F): Under the Centipede Sun.
Grecu creates the portrait of a landscape following its destruction by a war, by a natural disaster or an environmental catastrophe. Barren and deserted, it develops its own dynamics.
Pawel Janicki (PL): Oceanus.
As with a journey on the high seas, the interactive installation offers various possibilities of navigation through the stories of “Oceanus”.
Rainer Gamsjäger (A): Cluster.
The visitor is confronted by a massive bank of clouds, a huge horizontal column of smoke. What appears at first glance to be an exploration of natural phenomena and borderline experiences is simultaneously an intensive preoccupation with the digital possibilities offered by video technology and its suggestive power.

| Zusammen mit dem Media Art Flow Festival (MAFF) in Almelo/NL präsentiert das European Media Art Festival in diesem Jahr einen Media Art Garden. In den jeweiligen Innenstädten der Festival-Orte wird unabhängig vom übrigen Festival-Geschehen der Medienkunstgarten für Passanten und Besucher frei zugänglich sein – auch um dort selbst Hand anzulegen. | ||
“Kartoffelmusik” Die Künstler Karl Heinz Jeron aus Deutschland und Wessel Westerveld, genannt „Wexel“ aus den Niederlanden werden in öffentlichen Workshops sowohl ihre Arbeiten präsentieren als sie auch stetig weiterentwickeln. So entsteht im Laufe der Zeit ein interaktiver mechanischer Medienkunstgarten. International bekannt sind beide Künstler durch ihre kinetischen Objekte und Installationen, die sie bereits in zahlreichen Ländern ausgestellt haben. Gärten in den Niederlanden und auch in Deutschland passen sich immer mehr einem gewissen Schema an, dass man auch in Prospekten und Broschüren wiederfinden kann. Normen und Werte verschwinden, neue werden gebildet und somit wird auch ein Garten von seinen Besitzern ganz anders wahrgenommen und erlebt. Mit ihren künstlerischen Arbeiten und Geräten nehmen die Künstler diese Garten Standards ‚auf die Schippe‘ und setzen mit ihrem ‚grünen Daumen‘ ganz neue Maßstäbe für die kreative Parkgestaltung.

“Garden Machine 2” Karl Heinz Jeron will present electro-mechanical objects that draw their energy from fruit and vegetables. For instance, potatoes, which can produce up to one volt of electric power, are transformed into a source of energy for a mechanical sculpture that produces tones and modulates sounds. Using found material, Wexel constructs art machines that carry out absurd movements and can also create sounds. These two approaches are bound to draw the crowds. “Supergides”, the group of animators from Enschede in the Netherlands, will roam the streets of Osnabrück, encouraging visitors to participate in the Media Art Garden. Für viele in Europa kamen die Revolutionen in Ägypten und Tunesien als große Überraschung. Lange war man gewöhnt, die Länder der arabischen Welt als unveränderbare, traditionalistisch geprägte Gesellschaften präsentiert zu sehen. Die Dynamik und das Streben nach individueller Freiheit der jungen Menschen auf den Straßen schienen in keinster Weise in dieses Bild hineinzupassen.
Dass es jedoch seit Längerem einen großen Abstand gab zwischen der Erfahrungswelt der arabischen Jugend und den Machthabern, dass junge Menschen sich äußerst kritisch mit den herrschenden Verhältnissen auseinandersetzen, zeigt sich deutlich in der künstlerischen Produktion dieser Generation.
Junge Videokünstler und Filmemacher widmen sich in ihren Arbeiten einer Vielzahl von sozio-kulturellen und sozio-politischen Themen, wobei oft ein für Außenstehende erstaunlich freier Umgang mit Tabu-Themen zu beobachten ist. Die Auswirkungen von Krieg und Bürgerkrieg auf die Gesellschaft, offizielle Geschichtsschreibung und Rhetorik wird genauso hinterfragt wie Geschlechterrollen und der Umgang mit Bildern und Medien. Bei vielen Künstlern der arabischen Diaspora nimmt die internationale Stigmatisierung von Arabern in der westlichen Auffassung eine zentrale Rolle ein.
Das Programm „In der Ferne, so nah“ wird von der Kuratorin Charlotte Bank vorgestellt und zeigt Positio nen von Künstlern aus verschiedenen Ländern der arabischen Welt, zum Beispiel aus Ägypten, Syrien, Tunesien, Palästina, Libanon und dem Irak. Sie stellen eine Vielzahl von ästhetischen und experimentellen Ansätzen dar.

// NEWSLETTER 3/Feb/11: “SO CLOSE IN THE DISTANCE” – YOUNG ARAB VIDEO ART
Many in Europe were taken completely by surprise by the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia. For a long time, we were used to seeing the countries of the Arab world presented as unchangeable, traditionalist societies. The dynamics and the young people’s quest for individual freedom on the streets did not seem to fit into this picture at all.
And yet the artistic productions by this generation clearly show that there has been a great divide between the world of Arab youths and those in power for a long time, and that young people are highly critical of the prevailing conditions.
In their works, young video artists and filmmakers address a multitude of socio-cultural and socio-political topics. In the process, taboo subjects are dealt with in a manner considered by outsiders to be surprisingly liberal. Not only the impact of war and civil war on society, and the official writing of history and rhetoric are challenged but also gender roles and how images and the media are dealt with. The international stigmatisation of Arabs in the western perception plays a central role for many artists of the Arabic diaspora.
The programme “So close in the distance”, to be presented by curator Charlotte Bank, will show the positions of artists from various Arab countries, including Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq. They constitute a multitude of aesthetic and experimental approaches.

Die Ausstellung Planet M des Osnabrücker Medienkunstfestivals zeigt vom 27. April bis 29. Mai 2011 aktuelle Positionen international anerkannter
Künstler und Arbeiten junger Talente.
Moving Stories bildet den Hauptteil und wurde in internationaler Kooperation des EMAF mit fünf weiteren europäischen Kunstinstitutionen zusammengestellt. Präsentiert werden mediale Installationen unter anderem aus Belgien, Italien und Österreich. Thematisch beschäftigen sich die Arbeiten allesamt mit der Innovation der Erzählkunst. Rund um das bewegte Bild erforschen Künstlerinnen und Künstler neue Formen des Erzählens, jeder auf seine ganz persönliche künstlerische Art und Weise.

Das EMAF konnte die international renommierte Künstlerin Candice Breitz gewinnen, eine neue Arbeit für Moving Stories zu schaffen. Weitere teilnehmende Künstler sind: Nicolas Provost (B), Masbedo (I), Rainer Gamsjäger (A), Mihai Grecu (F) und Pawel Janicki (PL).
Transit – European Young Talents Forum als zweiter Part der Ausstellung zeigt 15 Arbeiten von Studierenden verschiedener europäischer Kunsthoch
schulen. Das Projekt fördert in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Festival Vidéoformes in Clermont-Ferrand und dem Kunsthaus FLACC workspace in Genk junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus sechs europäischen Ländern.
Auch aktuelle Beiträge zum Festival-Schwerpunkt Japanese Media Art Now werden in der Ausstellung zu
sehen sein und komplettieren das Programm zur 150-jährigen deutsch-japanischen Freundschaft, das sich auch in den Filmprogrammen wiederspiegeln wird.

Mihai Grecu: "Under the Centipede Sun"
The exhibition Planet M at the Media Art Festival in Osnabrück will present contemporary positions of internationally recognised artists and young talent between 27 April and 29 May 2011.
Moving Stories, the main part of the exhibition, was compiled in international cooperation between the EMAF and five other European art institutions. Multimedia installations from countries such as Belgium, Italy and Austria will be shown. All of the works of art address the subject of the innovation of narration. The artists explore new forms of narration related to the topic of moving images, each in their own very personal artistic way.

“Moving Stories”
The EMAF succeeded in encouraging the internationally renowned artist Candice Breitz to create a new piece for Moving Stories. Other participating artists include: Nicolas Provost (B), Masbedo (I), Rainer Gamsjäger (A), Mihai Grecu (F) and Pawel Janicki (PL).
Transit – European Young Talents Forum, the second part of the exhibition, will show 15 works by students from various European art academies. In collaboration with the festival Vidéoformes in Clermont-Ferrand and the art centre FLACC workspace in Genk, the project promotes young artists from six European countries.
The latest contributions to the focal point of the festival Japanese Media Art Now will also be shown at the exhibition, complementing the programme to mark the 150-year friendship between Japan and Germany, also to be reflected in the film programmes.
